John Smith* wanted a Medicare Supplement Plan. He dialed an 800 number and got the plan he wanted. While he was on the phone with the company, they asked if he needed prescription drug coverage. He did, so they transferred him over to the portion of the company that handled such things. The company had a $0 plan that seemed like a really good fit for him so he enrolled. Unbeknownst to him, he had signed up for a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan (MAPD), when what he needed was a standalone drug plan (PDP). There is a significant difference!
The effect this had was that the approximately $1300 in premiums he paid for the Medicare supplement plan did him no good, as a Medicare advantage plan does not work with a Medicare supplement plan.
The happy ending to the story was that after an independent licensed insurance agent (that's me) got involved, the situation was straightened out. Not only did he get on the Medicare supplement plan that he wanted, and the stand-alone prescription drug plan that he wanted, I managed to get him a refund of the almost $1300 in premiums he paid for the supplement while it was not in effect.
